UN Ocean Conference in Nice, France, Concludes

The Third UN Ocean Conference in Nice, France concluded on 13 June with a strong call to action for protecting and sustainably using the oceans, with a focus on accelerating progress on Sustainable Development Goal 14. By consensus the conference adopted a political declaration titled “Our ocean, our future: united for urgent action”, stressing that the ocean plays an essential role in mitigating the adverse effects of climate change.

“The ocean is fundamental to life on our planet and to our future, and we remain deeply alarmed by the global emergency it faces”, the Conference’s outcome document (A/CONF.230/2025/L.1) said, adding also: “Action is not advancing at the speed or scale required to meet Goal 14 and realize the 2030 Agenda [for Sustainable Development]”.
