It’s now very likely Australia will be announced as the host of the COP31 global climate talks in 2026 alongside Pacific nations. This would be a very big deal. The talks run for a fortnight and draw tens of thousands of delegates. It would be the largest diplomatic summit Australia has ever held, with satellite events in Pacific nations. Pope Francis and Indonesian Grand Imam Nasaruddin Umar yesterday, 5 September 2024, signed a joint declaration calling on religious leaders to deepen their cooperation in order to defend human dignity and fight climate change. The document, “Joint Declaration of Istiqlal 2024: Fostering Religious Harmony for the Sake of Humanity”, identifies climate change and dehumanisation as two serious crises facing the world today and states that interreligious dialogue is an effective tool for solving both local and global conflicts...

The United Nations General Assembly designated 7 September as the day to raise awareness and drive action on combating air pollution. In this, the Season of Creation, we are called on to renew our relationship with the Creator and all creation. Let us act to to reduce air pollution, improve health and preserve our climatefor the sake of all life. The Season of Creation is a month-long observance (1 September - 4 October) that calls on Christians to reflect on our lifestyles and the impact these have on the environment and to take action for our world. In his message for the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation which marks the commencement of the season, Pope Francis reminds us of "the call to conversion in lifestyles, to resist human degradation of the environment...leaving behind the arrogance of those who want to exercise dominion over others and nature itself,. He calls us to seek to live "a life that becomes a song of love for God, for humanity, with and for creation, and that finds its fullness in holiness."
