Forget the critical decade, what happens every single month during the next handful of years is crucial in determining how quickly we drain the remaining carbon budget needed to achieve the temperature goals of the Paris Agreement... #Generation Restoration. We cannot turn back time, but we can grow forests, revive water sources, and bring back soils. We are the generation that can make peace with land. The theme of this year’s World Environment Day is “land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience.”
Humanity depends on land. Yet, all over the world, a toxic cocktail of pollution, climate chaos, and biodiversity decimation are turning healthy lands into deserts, and thriving ecosystems into dead zones. They are annihilating forests and grasslands, and sapping the strength of land to support ecosystems, agriculture, and communities. That's my approach. Laudato Si' Week marks the anniversary of the launch of Pope Francis' ground-breaking encyclical letter Laudato Si' which was released in 2015, challenging us all to respond to the cry of Earth and the Cry of the Poor and to care for our common home.
Recognising that our responses have not been adequate, and the impact of climate change more pressing, in 2023 Pope Francis released Laudate Deum, focussing attention on climate change and its effects. The theme of Laudato Si' Week 2024 is "Seeds of hope". We are invited by our actions to be bringers of hope in a world where the effects of climate change are felt "in the areas of healthcare, sources of employment, access to resources, housing, forced migrations, etc." (LD #2)
In a wide-ranging conversation, Francis spoke about the wars across the world, immigration, climate change, his vision for the Catholic Church and his legacy. Ahead of the Church’s first World Children’s Day, the Pontiff talks about children as hope for the future.
"The Gospel is for everyone," Francis, who is from Argentina, said in Spanish. "If the Church places a customs officer at the door, that is no longer the church of Christ..." World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2024 is an annual event on April 28.
As climate change intensifies, workers around the globe find themselves at an increased risk of exposure to hazards. A “staggering” number of workers, amounting to more than 70 per cent of the global workforce, are likely to be exposed to climate-change-related health hazards, and existing occupational safety and health (OSH) protections are struggling to keep up with the resulting risks, according to a new report by the International Labour Organization (ILO). The report, Ensuring safety and health at work in a changing climate, says that climate change is already having a serious impact on the safety and health of workers in all regions of the world.
