Raising Indigenous Voices
International Day for Biological Diversity is celebrated annually on 22 May. This year it marked the commencement of Laudato Si' week (22-29 May). On Monday, 23 May, a conversation centered on raising Indigenous voices ahead of the UN biodiversity conference scheduled for October in Kumming, China, was broadcast from the Australian Catholic University Rome campus.

The UN’s World Meteorological Organization released its annual State of the Climate report on Wednesday, 18 May and the result is a grim account of the progression of the climate crisis. The report found that four key climate indicators broke records in 2021: greenhouse gas concentrations, ocean acidification, ocean temperature and sea level rise. “Today’s State of the Climate report is a dismal litany of humanity’s failure to tackle climate disruption. Fossil fuels are a dead end – environmentally and economically,” UN Secretary-General António Guterres said. “The only sustainable future is a renewable one. The good news is that the lifeline is right in front of us. Wind and solar are readily available and, in most cases, cheaper than coal and other fossil fuels. If we act together, the renewable energy transformation can be the peace project of the 21st century,” he added, as reported in The Irish Times |
